FUNCTION-SEMANTIC MICROSPHERE OF COLOR NAMES IN DIALECTAL TEXTS

Abstract

Introduction. The investigation is actual since the verbalized colors in various native speakers as well as dialectal groups is still under analysis. The applied text centric approach has proved to enable revealing the repertoire of lexical units for the function-semantic microsphere of color names,
their semantic and functional features and specific ethnic national character.
The purpose. The purpose of the article is to distinguish the language variant of the functionsemantic microsphere for color names in dialectal texts of the Mid Upper Dnieper patois. It therefore was to present its elements, their semantics and functioning in speech of the dialect speakers, as well as single out the specificity of color names usage.
The methods. Research methods: total selection method, descriptive with elements of system analysis, component and contextual analysis, quantitative calculations.
Main results of the study. The study resulted in presenting color names repertoire in dialectal texts of Mid Upper Dnieper patois, their usage frequency and quantitative correlation in all major lexical grammatical classes representing colors. The color microsphere proved to represent basic non-derivative color units (|б˙iлий,|чорний, чир|воний, зи|лений, |жовтий, |син’ій, голу|бий, ру|дий) related to the nucleus of the Ukrainian color concept. The periphery is shaped by subsidiary color names, color shades names and nominations for the multi colored notions found rarely in the dialectal texts. Mostly used color names are qualitative adjectives with typical inter-level (morphological, syntactical, word-building) categories. Less frequent are their verb derivatives and nouns, rarely adverbs and predicatives. Color
microsphere nucleus is singled out in the mentioned patois: the adjectives білий, червоний and чорний are used to represent colors that are specific for Mid Upper Dnieper ethnic group and are employed in their embroidery samples as reflections of ancient outlook positions.
Originality. The study is based on text centric approach that accounts for broad selection of
contexts with color lexical units as well as qualitative and quantitative features of the units in the microsphere under consideration.
Conclusions. The study originally deals with dialectal texts basis to present accomplished color
names analysis for the Mid Upper Dnieper patois, with their specific semantics, their functioning and
native speech habits in the definite region.
