Introduction. The article emphasizes the impact of war on Ukraine’s cultural heritage, focusing on the role of media in preserving and promoting cultural identity. The analysis draws on a range of sources, including news articles, academic research, and expert opinions, to explore the ways in which media representation shapes public perception of cultural heritage in times of the conflict.
The purpose. The goal of the article was to examine the influence of war on Ukrainian cultural heritage, with a focus on the media’s role in covering the destruction of cultural objects and historical monuments during the ongoing Russian invasion. To achieve this goal, the article analyzes the media’s coverage of the war, highlighting the structural and semantic features of media reports; identifies the peculiarities of their functional-stylistic possibilities; and examines the most commonly used types of media constructions in reporting on the war, considering the means of connection between media reports and international awareness.
The methods. The research includes a qualitative analysis of media reports and cases of cultural object destruction in Ukraine, applying a critical approach to evaluating information sources.
Results. The study reveals that the ongoing Russian invasion has had a devastating impact on Ukraine’s cultural heritage. The analysis of media reports and cases of cultural object destruction in Ukraine highlights that the war has resulted in the destruction of numerous historical monuments and cultural objects, including museums, churches, and other cultural institutions. The media plays a crucial role in covering the destruction of cultural heritage during the war, with many reports emphasizing the significance of these losses for Ukrainian national
identity and cultural resistance. The study identifies several types of media constructions used to report on the destruction of cultural heritage, including emotional appeals, patriotic rhetoric, and factual reporting.
Furthermore, the analysis reveals that the media’s coverage of the war has a significant impact on international awareness of the problem, with many reports sparking widespread condemnation and calls for action to protect
Ukraine’s cultural heritage. Finally, the study also highlights the importance of developing strategies for protecting
cultural heritage in the context of armed conflict, including international cooperation and the use of digital technologies to preserve cultural artifacts.
Originality. The study’s originality lies in its critical approach to evaluating media reports on conflicts, which is essential for better understanding their impact on society and politics.
Conclusions. The results of the study underscore the devastating impact of war on Ukraine’s cultural heritage, highlighting the critical role of the media in shaping international awareness and response to this crisis.
The findings of this study emphasize the need for a multifaceted approach to protecting cultural heritage in the
context of armed conflict, including the development of effective strategies for international cooperation, the use of
digital technologies to preserve cultural artifacts, and the promotion of critical media literacy to counter misinformation and propaganda. Ultimately, the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage is not only a national imperative but also a global responsibility, requiring collective action to safeguard the cultural diversity and richness of human civilization.
