SUBORDINATE NOUN PHRASES IN FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR

Abstract

Introduction. The problem of the grammatical nature of phrase, its place in the syntactic units system, functions in language and speech, structural models is debatable even now, thus, phrases require further theoretical research, what determines the relevance of the proposed research.
Purpose. To investigate the mechanisms of creation of elementary subordinate noun phrases of the modern Ukrainian language, distinguished in functional grammar.
Methods: descriptive with its techniques of observation and interpretation, systematization and classification of linguistic phenomena; structural, in particular the method of transformational analysis; comparative, the technique of characteristic comparison is used.
Results. It was found that subordinate noun phrases of attributive semantics divide into two large groups – systemic and non-systemic. Systemic phrases reflect the semantic and formal patterns of combining words established by the language system. Their formation is motivated either semantically or formally, they are formed in a sentence according to certain structural models. Phrase combinations of the “base noun + dependent adjective” model, specialized for expressing secondary attributive relations, become nuclear. The semi-nuclear zone is formed by phrase combinations of the “base noun + dependent noun” model, formed on the basis of two-component initial elementary sentences with qualitative predicates expressed by a nonspecialized form – a noun with a preposition. The formation of phrases of the nuclear and semi-nuclear zone is motivated semantically. The semi-peripheral and peripheral zones are filled with systemic phrases of the “base noun + dependent noun” model, the appearance of which is motivated purely formally – by a subordinating not valence conditioned syntactic connection. The formation of non-systematic phrases is not motivated either semantically or formally, it is caused by folding or shifting to an atypical position of certain clause members in speech with the purpose of its saving.
Originality. The formation of subordinate noun phrases of various models was analyzed for the first time, the original sentences and the processes accompanying their transformation into phrases were determined.
Conclusion. subordinate noun phrases of attributive semantics are the most productive type of phrases. Systemic and non-systemic subordinate noun phrases are formed from different original syntactic units and arise as a result of various transformations.
